I found this by splitting open some shale in a Devonian formation around Wardensville, WV that also had trilobites and crinoid stem segments. I don’t know what it is, but it looks like it has a stem, and if you look in the “body”, you can see some weird segment-looking things. Does anybody know if this is actually a fossil, or is it just some random Devonian crud?

The second picture is the other half of it, by the way.

@nathan-newell Nathan, I sent your photo to Prof. Carl Brett at UC who has Devonian experience.  Here’s his reply: “I suspect that this is just a small concentration of debris, probably within a burrow; I think I can make out shell fragments and possibly a crinoid columnar, though with just this photo it’s impossible to be certain.

@rleder I hadn’t thought of that, but maybe so! Thanks for the reply!

I got a nifty macro lens for my iPhone, and thought I’d try it out in this thing. I think there’s some organic-looking stuff in there.
