A little off-topic but thought I’d share this. It’s easy to trick the eye. Nope, this isn’t a real fossil (top with sunglasses) but it sure looks like the real McCoy. It’s the foliage imprint of a “living fossil” Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) tree found on the cover of my home Generac generator in Vermont.

A mix of dirt and tannic acid probably contributed to the making of this transitory pseudo fossil.

But the imprint and matrix color makes it a dead ringer (at a glance) for the official state fossil of Oregon–which happens to be the Miocene-age Metasequoia!

    <p style=”direction: ltr;”>Great jobs Louis,</p>
What is the matrix and what holds it together?
