My Earth and Space Science Class hosted a class of 14 4th and 5th graders and assisted as the 4th and 5th graders sorted through some of the auroa matrix. They drew scientific drawings of their favorite find . I was so proud of my students. We completed the geologic time line activity and my students had worked…[Read more]

I know several of you are regular Peace River visitors, and a few of you were offering to take people out. Well I am ready! I know the river is high right now, but as soon as it lowers enough, my son and I really want to go. We don’t scuba dive, so would like to be in an area shallow enough to dig and sift. I would like to go bef…[Read more]

Hi Ginny!
I’d love to take you and your son to the peace. This is the USGS website we use. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/fl/nwis/uv?site_no=02295637 (Zolfo Springs). How we gauge when we go in the river is when Zolfo Springs is at 5′ or less you can find a place to dig. However you also have to watch the discharge. It’s measured in cubic feet per…[Read more]

Best,

Hi Jen,
A few of us are attending including myself, @egardner, @bmacfadden, @vperez, @paul-kester, @john-westgaard and a few more. We should meet up!-
Great! I created a spreadsheet with everyone listed above’s talk times and put in a column for availability outside of the conference. You guys have an awesome looking citizen science session! I’m looking like the outsider! You can find and edit it here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KODV3CY8_OjqZla3gzXg1IccFsYDjsNoD3iRwO4mTYE/edit?usp=sharing

I don’t think they have been posted on the Facebook page yet. I’ve put a lot on my Facebook page, here is a link to the album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10209902784143213.1073741846.1142160438&type=1&l=35755f083b It should be public but if you have issues let me know, feel free to use any of them you want!

Very nice finds, @pam-plummer! Thank you for sharing! Have you taken individual photos and posted these finds in the Fossil Gallery? Oh, and a quick tip: including something for scale, like a pen or a quarter, would make your image even better 🙂

I think that @george-powell has used Elmer’s glue to stabilize his fossils. We use a special glue here at the museum. @vperez do you have any good ideas?
-
There are a number of different consolidants that could be used. Our museum website has a page with some helpful information https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/vertpaleo/amateur-collector/preparation/
-
-
The shelly critters from the Paleozoic can be wrapped in toilet paper to stop from knocking around in bags or containers- this is usually what I do. Or just fill any void space in a container with toilet paper so that they can’t move around.
-
A couple of readily available options are Duco cement which can be purchased on line at Walmart or in many hobby stores or super glue. Dilute either of these about 1 part glue to 5 parts acetone and paint it on the fossils. Diluting the cement ensures it is carried into the fossil locking everything down.

I’ve been working on the image attachment bug. You can now scroll down on this page and see Stephanie’s images posted.

Awesome! Thank you Max. Although, I noticed this doesn’t seem to apply to all the groups? Is there away to apply what you’ve done to all groups? For example, @bmacfadden attempted to post a photo in the Paleo Tutorial group, which showed up in the activity feed on the homepage but isn’t visible within the group page.

Good news/bad news situation. Good news is there is only 23 instances of this bug in the database. The bad news is the bug manifested as saving all the image attachments as activity updates instead of as group updates with the group id. So I’m going through the posts and comparing the date to the user’s activity on that date and making changes…[Read more]
