6 years, 4 months ago6 years, 4 months ago@gail-tennant, @jim-chandler I’d say it is definitely bone and I don’t see any matrix on it. You need to have someone put eyes on the specimen before you start removing anything that you think is matrix as it may be part of the fossil.
The specimen looks quite porous. Is it fairly light in weight or really heavy like a rock of the same s…[Read more]

6 years, 7 months ago6 years, 7 months agoHi @jim-chandler, because the poster was too big, @richard-bex used a workaround. Click the link at the end of his post. It should automatically start a download of the poster for you. As a low resolution “teaser”, I took a screenshot from my computer for you to check out. Is there anything in particular you’re interested in on the poster?

7 years, 2 months ago7 years, 2 months agoHi Jim @jim-chandler. Thank you for your response. It could be Dendostrea frons, but the ribs on the one I found originate at the hinge of the shell and from what I can see in the frons they originate more from a center line of the shell. It does appear that there are remnants of possible clasper spines on bottom shell, but it is hard to sa…[Read more]

7 years, 3 months ago7 years, 3 months ago@lance-comfort @lmccall@jim-chandler Lance, I had to look that ID up on Google. I’m an invertebrate guy. After looking up Tilly Bone and the more technical term I was still unsure if this thing is some kind of normal fish part or a pathological one. Anyway, a very interesting find.

7 years, 3 months ago7 years, 3 months ago@jkallmeyer@lmccall@jim-chandler With your help I believe I have figured this one out. I believe it is a fossil Tilly Bone (Hyperostosic Bone) from a large bony fish. What do you think. Here is a magnified picture from http://lakeneosho.org/Fossil/index.html, which looks very similar to mine. Thanks….Lance
