7 years, 1 month ago7 years, 1 month agoThis was found searching through a matrix sample from the Lee Creek Mine in Aurora, NC. It is shaped like a tooth, but it also looks like a clump of sediment. Does anyone have a suggestion?

7 years, 1 month ago7 years, 1 month agoPerhaps your lumpy looking fossil, which is pictured first above, is coprolite.

Hi, @kyle-quina – we can minimally say this is Kingdom Animalia > Phylum Mollusca > Class Bivalvia
It looks sort of like Trigoniocardia decidua to me: https://neogeneatlas.net/species/trigoniocardia-decidua/
Let me know what you think!
Check out the images on that link and compare it to the inside of your specimen.
Talk to you soon, Jen

It looks like a coral fragment to me too. @vperez, what do you think?
-
It is indeed a coral. @kyle-quina since you know it is a coral you can use the taxon helper and type in Anthozoa. This should auto-fill most of the other data. It’s hard to tell what kind of coral because it’s such a small fragment, so I would just put coral in the common name.
