5 years, 2 months ago5 years, 2 months agoI went to the ordivicianatlas and learned a little. The first 2 I presented appear to be occidentalis and frankfortensis but neither look like the 3rd photo. Anyone know have an idea about it? Don’t know about alveata. Saw a subjugata and a richmondensis mentioned but no photos.
Does the publication include photos of specimens?
Lastly…am I…[Read more] -

@tom-mcgovern check out the Ordovician Atlas: http://www.ordovicianatlas.org/atlas/brachiopoda/rhynchonellata/orthida/plectorthidae/hebertella/ there are three species of Hebertella on there with nice images, location, and stratigraphic data. I also have a publication by a past lab mate on the evolutionary history of Hebertella if that is…[Read more]

Hi, @tom-mcgovern, depends on where and when in geologic time you found them. There are quite a few Hebertella species. Can you give us some more information?

5 years, 2 months ago5 years, 2 months agoHey group members. I really enjoy searching for, finding and prepping fossils in SW Ohio. I am not, however, very learned in all the scientific names of them. Would it be “against the rules” to post pictures of brachiopods and people tell me more about them?
When I find them they are not in matrix, they are complete, loose/single and only need…[Read more]

Hi, @tom-mcgovern– that seems perfectly appropriate to me! Just include some information on where you found the specimens and we can do our best to help with identification!
-
Yes, looking forward to seeing what you have found!

Do you do much fossil hunting in the Toledo area?-
Tom, if you haven’t already, be sure to reach out to the North Coast Fossil Club. (http://www.ncfclub.org/) They may know of some fossil localities near Toledo.

I do some fossil hunting in the Toledo area. I am not sure of locations in Toledo except for fossil park in Sylvaina. Do you have suggestions?

5 years, 4 months ago5 years, 4 months agoI’m new to the group.
I have prepped bryozoans and other specimens with really tiny spaces. Acid kinda works but it also affects the actual fossil a bit which I figured was counter productive. The best ways I found were either with a fine tipped dremel point (that too could damage the surrounding piece) or the old fashioned way if the material is…[Read more]
