Will I be able to collect fossils for myself, to take home?

One of the goals of the workshop is to collect fossils that advance scientific research through photographic quality on the myFOSSIL e-museum. We therefore expect that fossils that pertain to this research will be collected by the citizen scientists (you) for the purpose of uploading to the e-museum. You are free to collect during the creek trip for your personal collection.

Would I be able to return to the creek on my own some other time?

A Florida Fossil Collecting Permit can be purchased through the Florida Museum of Natural History’s website (link: https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/vertpaleo/amateur-collector/fossil-permit). Any trips outside of this workshop will be done on your own time, expense, and liability. All workshop participants will be expected to follow Florida fossil collecting rules (see link above).

I would like to stay in Gainesville for longer than the designated trip, is this possible?

Yes, however you will be responsible for the additional lodging costs incurred during your prolonged stay. Please let us know that you intend to do this before we make your travel arrangements.

What will I need to pack?

Attire:

    • For the creek collecting trip, you will be required to wear shoes that you are comfortable getting wet. We recommend closed-toed, rubber-soled shoes as there can be broken glass found in the creek bed. You will also want to pack close that you are comfortable getting wet, swimsuits are not recommended. We also recommend you bring a hat and sunglasses as the sun can be fierce.

For the rest of the workshop, casual attire or business casual attire will suffice. Please keep in mind that Gainesville is hot and humid during July, with daily rain storms in the late afternoon. As we will be spending time indoors, a light sweater is recommended.

Bringing sunscreen and a rain jacket will help you enjoy your trip, no matter the weather!

Technology:

    • Participants will be asked to bring a device to take pictures with, either a smart phone with a camera, a point and shoot digital camera, or a more advanced camera. There is no need to purchase a fancy digital camera for this workshop.

Participants will also be asked to bring their own laptop. Laptops will be used to manipulate images with software, as well as to upload fossils to the myFOSSIL e-museum. Applicants are not disqualified if they do not have access to a laptop. We do not have enough laptops for all participants, but case-by-case arrangements may be possible. Please inquire if you do not have your own laptop.

Fossils:

Participants will be asked to bring a small sample of their personal fossil curation to practice the photography and software techniques. We ask that you bring no more than 10-20 individual pieces whose weight does not exceed 5 pounds, as they will need to travel with your regular luggage. Applicants are not disqualified if they do not have access to fossils. All fossils collected during the creek trip will be for the participant to keep for their own private collection and utilize during the workshop.
