What causes this circular pattern? Many rocks like this have been found in the creek.

    • Every year during that particular period of time there was a wet and dry season and the marks of those seasons are still visible in the rings of the rock. These rocks are usually formed in mud. It reminds me of Dendrochronology( the formation of tree rings)

    • @pamela-fabrick would this be why I find so many on the property? Btw, thank you for answering my questions. Im not new to rock-hounding but am 100% new at knowing what they are.

    • You’re welcome! It certainly could be if there was a sufficient mud floor during the time it took place. This is the only thing that I’m aware of that would form the rings like that.

    • @pamela-fabrick I added another photo of a different rock with the same pattern.

    • The second rock looks more like a concretion. I don’t see rings. They form when chemical precipitation begins around the nucleus in the sediment. Like a mineral grain, and begins to collect. Not an expert though, just a rock hound😊
