Beautiful as is!
@stephanie-morris Lovely fossil, it definitely is a gastropod! You can put gastropoda in for classification. If you put in geochronology and lithostratigraphy I can mark this research grade. You can figure those out by using the app Rockd. Let me know if you have any questions please let me know and tag me if you finish!
@mason-hintermeister Great! And, thanks for the lead on the Rockd. Super useful – especially as geochronology in this area is tricky (for me at least). The Red Mountain road cut is 2-3 mi from me & ranges Cambrian thru Mississippian. Thus, I was surprised that I have Pennsylvanian (Pottsville Formation) rocks. Info completed, but need help with ‘Group’ & ‘Member’. Please let me know what else I need to do.
@mason-hintermeister – any thoughts about the rock the gastropod is on? The elongated shape and super smooth underside are puzzling.
@stephanie-morris unfortunately the shape is not diagnostic and there is no residue which could suggest what it was pressed against. Two best guesses are a large rock inclusion (looks like the rock is a conglomerate so rock inclusions are not unexpected) or a piece of plant material which has worn away
@mason-hintermeister Thanks so much for looking and for including your thought process 🙂
