This is probably not a fossil, but could you take a picture of the ends of the specimen? In Petrified wood, the rings (and sometimes even the cell structure) is preserved and easily visible

I also noticed a small star shape at 4:00 and several large ones around 5,6,10 o’clock
@john-f unfortunately I do not think this is petrified wood or any other fossil, you can use the app Rockd to find places which are likely to have fossils and what type of fossils so don’t stop looking!
