    Hi,

I was wondering if this year the students are completing an IRB parent and student consent form.  I have a new group of students this year.  Also, my plans are to scan in semester one and do the projects in semester 2.  We are advancing in our light unit so I would like to introduce the students to the 3D scanning process soon (next week or so).  Should I do the pretest now or before lesson 1 next semester?

    Thanks,

    Mayra

    • Hi Mayra, we have an active IRB approval and you can use the same letters we used last year. I am submitting an IRB renewal where I will request we use opt-out letters rather than the opt-in letters we are using now. I can post scans of our approved consent/assent letters here. Because your two activities happen over 3+ months, I suggest you do the pretest now, then do another administration in early January, and then do a final posttest about a week after you finish your lesson 2. This way we will have 3 data points capturing your students’ perceptions at times preceding and following iDigfossils activities. Let me know if you’d like to discuss this in more detail.

Also, now that we know the date of our 3d scanning clinic in Gainesville, you can announce the event to your students and their parents. I think Claudia already has a flyer you can use.

      • I have a copy of last year’s letter. Is the survey still 54 questions? It’s going to take me a while to collect these letters. Can I still let them explore the scanners or not at all?

        • Yes, the survey is still 54 questions but we have updated it based on your feedback. This survey was designed for and validated with middle and high school students.

You can definitely engage in all iDigFossils activities. We need informed consent when we intend to use data for “research” purposes (i.e., presentations, publications) but we can still collect data for project evaluation purposes.
