5 years, 7 months ago5 years, 7 months agoI am taking my daughter to visit my son in Palm Springs Florida in a couple of weeks and wondered if anyone knew of a nearby site they can share with me? I was all excited about the Peace River but found out it has both alligators and sharks, and maybe at the same time! I am excited about posting some of my fossils here for identification. Seems my iPad has a higher res than my camera. 😐
Hi Greg,
You can find fossilized Clam shells with calcite crystals in the interiors in Fort Drum Crystal mine. The mine about 1 and a half hour drive north from Palm Springs. They do charge admission, about $60 per adult. At one point you could go collectiong in the pit, but now you can only collect from the rock piles. This is their website: http://www.thefortdrumcrystalmine.com/ . You should probably call them first to make sure they’re open. If you are looking for a nearer site, there is a road cut in Palm Beach on Country Club road. This site isn’t particularly great for collecting, but you can see burrows and coral fossils. Here is some more information on it: http://www.geosciences.fau.edu/events/virtual-field-trips/anastasia/palm-beach-road-cut.php .
Good luck.
Thank you so much. I’ll take some photos wherever I wind up. 👍
