Hi, @nathan-newell – I am not very familiar with the fossils in your area. How can you be certain this is not a bivalve? It seems like the useful ID parts are missing. I’m curious to hear your thoughts, identifying fragments is always tricky. Thanks, Jen

    • Hi, @jbauer ! Honestly I’m not certain at all, that was just my best guess. Do you think this is more of a bivalve? Thanks! 😁

      • @nathan-newell – I am not sure either! It is so hard to tell with partial shells. It looks like it could be argued either way. Are there many bivalves in the Devonian of that area? In my experience, bivalves don’t preserve as well or as often in the Paleozoic. My bivalve knowledge doesn’t really extend out of the Cincinnatian (where there are only a few common species). 0_o

        • @jbauer – I don’t see much that I could definitively identify as bivalves, they mostly seem like brachiopods. Then again, it could be that I’m assuming that I’ll find brachiopods and that’s making me inclined to see brachs. I’ll try to keep a more attentive eye out for bivalves. 😁
