Lisa Schenk has contributed a new specimen to myFOSSIL!

    • Oooo! Where is this one from?

    • My notes say it’s from the Clarno nut beds. I got it at the NARG auction but the only info that came with it was that it was from Oregon. Do you agree with the info I’ve added here?

    • I don’t think it’s Juglans. It seems to long for the Juglans we find there. I would expect to see a vascularized fruit wall (in this case parallel striations) and a seed with basal lobing. It could be that the inside actually is the fruit and somehow the ash didn’t bur away the fleshy covering and the striations were erroded but I think this is something like Mastixia (related to dogwoods) or Phoenix (date palm). I lean more to Mastixia though.

    • I also think it’s Clarno. Was a sealant put on it? It looks shinier than normal.

    • It does have a sealant on it, yes. Also someone at narg told me it looks like a walnut but I’m more keen on your guess to be honest!
