This is a very nice Aporrhais pespelicani, but it’s not a fossil one… the quick answer to your question is “it’s very diffficult”. I can send you a link where I give some explanation to your question
Actually, where was this found?
@max-dereme the shell was left on my desk along with some other shells that may have come from a quarry in Florida, but we aren’t 100% sure! They were left with me because they didn’t have locality data, but could be used for education. Thanks for your help!
I’d be surprised for this to come from a quarry… my guess is that it’s from the West European coast (Portugal, France, Spain), or a bit more south (west-African coast). Over here I explain how to recognize fossil from modern shells: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/91298-gastropod-madness-on-the-banjaard/&do=findComment&comment=1007364 (hopefully you can copy the link)
beautiful
It’s so cool to know that such an exotic species made it all the way to the FOSSIL office!
@jeanette-pirlo agreed! Thank you @max-dereme for the great info!
@sadie-mills glad to help 🙂
