Nathan Newell has contributed specimen mFeM 51960 to myFOSSIL!

    • @nathan-newell – thank you for linking in the discussion, that is a really interesting specimen. I can see where Carl is coming from thinking it could be a burrow. Something that would be helpful is knowing the ‘way up’ of the bedding plane when you find stuff like this – not always possible but something to remember when you are in the field.

A burrow shaft makes more sense to me than a stem since the hodge podge at the top is not really any one thing.

      • @jbauer I don’t think I can really identify the ‘way up’ for this one, but that’s something I’ll keep in mind for the future. Many of the fossils I find are in the scree of a road cut so I won’t know up from down, but for those that I do know the ‘up’, I’ll mention it in the comments.

        • Yeah, that’s commonly where I collect as well! Definitely something to consider in the field though! It’s one of those things you learn in sedimentology as ways to help orient you to become ‘one with the rock’ or so my old instructors used to say.
