If you’re ever in Scotland, it is worth a visit to “Tràigh á Chorail” – Coral Beach, on the Isle of Skye. The “sand” that you walk on is not sand at all, but the bleached skeletons of a coraline seaweed known as Maërl. Some (living) Maërl beds are up to 8000 years old, and it grows at a pace of around 1 mm per year! Maybe not technically a fossil, but worth the trip anyway! Skye is locally known as “Dinosaur Island”, and I’m not doing it justice in this brief sentence, but for fossil-lovers, the rest of the island is not to be missed! #fossil
