Where did you find it? Location can help narrow down the possibilities of what it is!
That’s the thing 😫 my friend gave it to me. His father gave it to him, along with some matrix copper and other fossils. His father was in the Navy and they moved around a lot. They did lived in Florida for many years. He said his father never told him what it was. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago. A geologist looked at it and was stumped as well, she said she really has no idea. Seems petrified slab of .. ? It’s quite heavy. I’ll take more pictures and post measurements.
@eliana-r @sadie-mills This looks like either the trunk or root from a Pennsylvanian age tree like Lepidodendron.
Oh wow
Thank you
I agree with @jess-cost looks Carboniferous plant-like to me! A big specimen!
@eliana-r This is the root from a club moss tree called lepidodendron. However, we give the roots the morphogenus name of Stigmaria.
@eliana-r – we can narrow in your classification if you are interested in editing the specimen information.
Kingdom Plantae > Family Lepidodendraceae > Genus Lepidodendron.
