@jbauer @david-hanes Hi, David! Sometimes graptolites have spines or a rod-like extension on one end that can help with identification. Do you see anything like that?
These look very similar to the graptolites that this person found at Lusters Gate, a little town just east of Blacksburg:

It turns out this location was described in Fossil Collecting in the Mid-Atlantic States by Jasper Burns. Burns reported that he found Climacograptus graptolites there, and these look like they could fit that genus. If you’re curious, Lusters Gate sits on the Moccasin Formation from the Mid to Late Ordovician:
