Hi, @heath-carroll – not sure I’m seeing anything pop out but it’s hard to tell. Did you see anything specific that you think may be a fossil?
The bubble part on upper right side is the head and just to the left of that is what I had previously thought was armor plating. But I found pictures of batoidea that have fins with those same dots on them. This is pretty cool stuff.
Hm, I’m not really seeing it but let me tag in some people who know more about rays than I do and maybe they can see something I don’t. @vperez @fauve-wilson
Well I can say with certainty that it is not a ray. I can’t quite tell from the photo, but it may be a piece of limestone composed of invertebrate fossils. Where did you find it?
#vperez it was limestone from north central or eastern Iowa.
I should get an address from someone so I could just send some of these do you could see what I’m trying to show I have a ton of them so Ii didn’t think it would be hard to get an I’d.
#vperez this spade shape is what I believe to be the stinger it is always at the end of the long tail.
@heath-carroll – I’m still not seeing anything. I agree with @vperez that it is likely a chunk of limestone. I don’t think you’ll be finding any rays in your area and if you did it would just be the mouth plates.
