What is it? from the myFOSSIL app 4 years, 7 months ago 4 years, 7 months ago4 years, 7 months agoI believe our first fossil. It is in bedded in a large rock, next to a creek bed. Near Nashville Tennessee. It has what appears to be bone coming out of the rock. I haven’t measured it yet. What information is needed to best help identify this? Thank you all! #fossil

Hi! The third picture appears to be the most informative. I don’t think it’s bone though because of the concentric rings. Is there a way you could get a picture like the third but with more of the thing in question in view? The other 3 are too far away.

I’m leaning to gastropod (snail). Spire to the left and siphonic canal to the right. I’m thinking the concentric pattern might be from the shell’s coiling and then being cut obliquely. There are some snails with tight coils. Shelly fossils are commonly found in limestone because they are both made of calcium carbonate. Limestone generally forms under warm, shallow and basic (in terms of ph) conditions. So it was probably just burried under regular marine sediment.
