Delwin Glasner has contributed specimen mFeM 61291 to myFOSSIL!

    • Very cool, @delwin-glasner! I would like to mark this research grade, but first, we need to update the taxonomy: Kingdom -> Animalia, Phylum -> Mollusca, Class -> Bivalvia, Order -> Pectinida, Family -> Pectinidae

    • I can’t give you a firm ID on this, sorry – it’s quite worn (this happens often to scallops, they quite like clean fast water which means they come into contact with hard debris not uncommonly – including each other’s shells!) so it’s also lost the details of its auricles, resilifer, and things like whether or not it had a byssal notch and ctenolium. I think it’s probably a species of Argopecten (a.k.a. “Plagioctenium” in a lot of the older literature from California) or Aequipecten. I can’t find many references to Oligocene scallops from California – the ones I can find illustrated are not congeneric with this specimen based on the nature of their sculpture.
