Hi would you mind identifying a fossil coral or plant for me?
Hi @jason-humphreys this is coral. Southern Florida was intermittently underwater throughout the Pliocene and Pleistocene (for about the last 5 Ma). The small lines within the larger swirls are septa (a coral structure) which we don’t see in plants. Also, coral is already mineralized (calcium carbonate) whereas in plants, mineralization is incredibly rare (Celtis (sugarberry) fruits).
