Tok Moon has contributed a new specimen to myFOSSIL!

    • @mackenzie-smith can you help with this ID?

    • Hi, @Tok-Moon, can you add photos of the sides as well, with a scale bar?

    • Hi @tok-moon! This looks like the stem of some sort of tree fern, probably in the family Cyatheaceae. This is the family that most modern tree ferns belong to. The large, squiggly, semi-circles are leaf bases – regions on the stem where a leaf would attach. Although not true wood, these parts can be found in association with petrified wood. Most of those deposits are Eocene (55-34 million years ago) or Miocene-Pliocene (23-2 million years ago). Fossil wood (and associated fossil material) is severely understudied in Indonesia. Do you have pictures of the cross section? This is the best way to get plant stems identified. (@samantha-ocon, @sadie-mills)
