@kyle-griffiths Sorry, I know this is a very late reply, but I found this information online on a forum for rock ID/collecting. Hope this helps. “Conchoidal fractures are what you should be looking for. Like another reply said, obsidian is basically volcanic glass. It breaks in a very distinctive pattern. It looks like a series of curved, smooth lines. I imagine that tar would crumble and not be able to break cleanly.
Obsidian will also have a distinctive, glass-like luster. Also, tar will be softer than obsidian.”
