Nathan,
Were these Brachiopoda fossils in a matrix, or were they eroded from the matrix, hanging out in a gravel bar on the river?
@david-hanes Hi, David! These were found embedded in a really hard matrix. It was like a bed of a dozen or so, and I managed to thwack out 3 nice ones with my hammer and chisel.
Nathan,
I located your collection site using “www.gps-coordinates.net”. I admire your persistence and patience in extracting the fossils from the matrix.
When I was collecting from the Mississippi sites the Bivalvia fossils were usually free from matrix and their outer shells were undamaged, so I was very lucky.
So…
We own a farm in Botetourt Co., Virginia at latitude 37.490392, longitude -79.81867, east of Fincastle, VA, off of the “Oak Ridge Road”. The property is located between the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains.
** After this Covid – 19 event clears up this year in the summer, I propose to invite you to travel from Cville over Afton Mt. and down I-81 to stay at the farm. The main farm house was built in 1854 has been renovated, and has room for 4 adults. Then we could travel to this Brachiopoda collection site in WVA . These sites are normally on private property and hard to find.
It takes 5 hours to drive to the farm from Cayce/Columbia, SC up I-77 (North) then I-81 North. I would need to schedule the stay with my sister (who lives in Roanoke) also. But we normally stay at least 5 days at a time at the farm. It has all modern conveniences.
Think this over and let me know if you are interested…

@david-hanes Sure, that sounds like fun! Just to set your expectations, though, keep in mind this is the first time I’ve been able to actually extract brachiopods relatively complete from the matrix, at least in West Virginia. But anyway,we’ll have to get together after all this Coronavirus stuff blows over.
Nathan,
I project that the Covid-19 crisis will settle by the end of July, 2020. Let’s keep in touch on this plan.
@david-hanes Sounds good!
