Hey @dawn-vitale ! This looks a like a part of a horn coral
Sorry, @Dawn-Vitale! I accidentally deleted your comment!! I was going to tell you that https://macrostrat.org/map/#/z=1.5/x=16/y=23/bedrock/lines/ can be very useful for figuring out the age of the rocks where you found this.
Most of the strata around New Castle, PA is Carboniferous. It’s mostly Pennsylvanian epoch with some Mississippian strata to the NW.
Matthew, you nights as well be speaking Greek to me . Honestly, all I do is dig. Lol
Might
All I know is I found it in my creek
Have you seen the fossil I found filled with crystals? No one seems to be telling me what it is . Unless no one knows. But I think it’s some sort of sea shell or sea creature
Hey @dawn-vitale! The Carboniferous was the second to last time period of the Paleozoic Era, meaning that’s it a couple hundred million years older than the time of the dinosaurs (Mesozoic Era). The Carboniferous is divided into two smaller periods of time known as the Mississippian and then the Pennsylvanian. Pennsylvania is actually known for its “Pennsylvanian” tree ferns fossils. And much of the fossil fuels like oil and coal that large parts of PA are known for come from ancient decomposed plant material from the Carboniferous Era.
So, your specimens are somewhere between 299-359 million years old.
Here is a link to an Eons episode from PBS on the Carboniferous that’s pretty informative: https://watch.montanapbs.org/video/the-age-of-giant-insects-mn9nez/
Cool. Thank u Mathew
