3 years, 10 months ago3 years, 10 months agoCould anyone help me identify this I have never seen anything close to it it’s not pottery or man made, I found it in a rocky cove on a lake near Texas and Oklahoma #fossil
It looks man-made, no living thing looks like that
Or it might be part of a cidaroid sea urchin “test” or shell, because I can see the big bump and little bumps around it being similar to the test of, say, a specimen of Phyllacanthus imperialis.
Do keep in mind this image is from Wikipedia, so it may not be as reliable, but the pictures do seem to match up. Link to image: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Phyllacanthus_imperialis_test.JPG
The ridges at the edge of your fossil seem to also match up to the edges of the various sections in the sea urchin pictured, but I’m not sure. Tagging in some people to help- @jbauer and @samantha-ocon could you take a look, thank you!
Hi @daniel-park @aiden-denham @kyle-griffiths – it is certainly an echinoid test plate – or a single element from their body skeleton. Certainly a cidaroid of some kind or a regular (vs. irregular) sea urchin.
@daniel-park thanks for the help
