Very cool find @mason-hintermeister, @vperez or @bill-heim can take a look and verify your ID!
Thank you, but I didn’t find it. I bought it as indicated in the field notes. I assumed that’s alright as long as the Locale information is preserved? If not I can remove it. I’m fairly certain of the ID 🙂
You can post it as a specimen but it can’t be marked as research grade. It will be marked as curated instead.
Understood. Though I think if researchers ignored every fossil that had changed hands, it would be to the detriment of paleontology.
@trevor-rempert @mason-hintermeister Usually, for a specimen to be considered research-grade within a repository, it cannot be logged in another collection/repository. In this case, as it is a bought specimen, I’m going to tag in @sadie-mills and @samantha-ocon! Do you know if this specimen has been curated in any other collections? The issue lies in one specimen’s data popping up from multiple collections!
@mackenzie-ross-2 I posted an oligocene dolphin tooth which I may donate to the Calvert Marin Museum, should I delete it from here?
@mason-hintermeister @trevor-rempert @bill-heim Hi everyone, there seems to be some confusion here. Specimens that were bought/traded/etc. can still be marked as research grade, as long as the specimen was obtained legally and locality information is accurate.
Mason, if you decide to donate a specimen to another museum that you’ve uploaded, you just need to let us know so that there aren’t two records sent to GBIF.
