Partial leaf fragment I found in my backyard. It is 2 inches wide and 3 and 3/4 inches long, but it is partial so who knows how long it really was. Any ideas on the species or age of the fossil?

    • Hi @a-trilobite. Because it’s an angiosperm we know it’s Cretaceous or younger, however, without more of the margin, cuticle or higher order venation it’s too hard to say which angiosperm. Can you give a more specific location? It might be possible to compare (and ID) with known specimens if a nearby flora is already described.

    • @mackenzie-smith it was found in Northeast Ohio and I didn’t have to dig for it it was sitting on top of the ground. My guess is that it formed when the leaf fell on some mud, which quickly hardened.

    • It was also in a forest

    • @a-trilobite My guess is that your guess about it being recent with quick hardening mud is correct. I don’t see any Cretaceous or younger rocks in NE OH and that sort of venation only occurs from Cretaceous onward (one, and only one exception in the Triassic) (The Triassic one is a very weird gymnosperm). If you look at the trees around you, you might see what it is.
