They’re solid, but over millennia, evolution roots out the bad designs and favors the better ones. Since curls are more compact and streamlined, orthacones with more curled shells breed and survives, until the once straight orthacones has evolved into the tight spiraled ammonites. And by the way, I miss the orthacone profile picture 🙂

interestingly, among the bizarrely curled heteromorph ammonites of the cretaceous there is Baculites, an ammonite that reverted to having a straight shell like its orthocone ancestors of yonder.
