Shell bit or rock? Found in west Michigan
Greetings @kora-wilholr ! This almost appears to be a brachiopod shell. If you could post a few more photos from different angles and some general location info (county or town) that would help verify and aid in narrowing down an ID .
@matthew-gramling it was found in Allegan County near Lake Michigan
App wouldn’t allow me to add photos, so I reuploaded with more angles
@kora-wilholr Great! So, it appears you collected this from the Coldwater Shale or Marshall Sandstone formation. Both of which are from the Carboniferous period and Mississippian in age. From the photos it looks like a brachiopod, but it could also be a very convincing “pseudo-fossil” composed of weathered rock. For now, I lean towards the former.
@matthew-gramling I do find a lot of pieces with crinoid stems, corals, and small brachiopod imprints (I believe) in the same area, so I could definitely believe either. Thank you for your help! Super informative comments like that help me learn more in depth and I appreciate it!
@kora-wilholr Glad to be of service!
