Much of my time, unfortunately is telling people that what they think is a fossil is just a rock.  A key to identifying something as a fossil is that it will have a recognizable pattern or structure.  Rocks can have bumps or holes but there is no pattern to them, just random bumps and holes.  To illustrate this think of finding part of an old rusty can and a random, rusty piece of metal.  You can instantly tell that the part of the rusty can is a can because it has structure.  Part of it may be round, there may be hole where the contents were poured out of, etc.  The random piece lacks that structure.  It may have bumps it may have holes but there is no organized structure to it.

    • Looks like what you are dealing with is a classic case of Joe Dirt
And the Meteor…. please don’t let this discourage your participation on here, we need and appreciate all your help on here @bill-heim

    • It is not discouraging me, I just spend a lot of time removing random rocks from the emuseum. If people were more selective, it would save me and them time and effort. A lot of people get excited when they find what they think is a fossil. I was just trying to point that with a fossil is is usually obvious that it is not just some plain ole rock.
