Upstate NY, a ton of Devonian age fossils found in the area. Any idea if this is more recent or maybe some a water mammal of that age? #fossil #collectionsite

    • There are no Devonian mammals, they didn’t exist yet. This is a ball joint bone that was part of a ball and socket joint, likely located at the hip of the animal. This is a much more recent mammal fossil, and probably isn’t a fossil at all, but is a modern bone.

    • End of femur of probably a cow.

    • I was just noting in that area, that’s fair I didn’t know no larger mammals existed then. How long does something need to be underground to constitute it as a fossil? I know in the 50+ years my family has lived on this land there have never been cows, interesting.

    • the remains of an organism must be over 10 000 years of age in order to warrant as a fossil. and yes, there were no mammals around in the Devonian. there weren’t any birds or reptiles either. in fact, the very first amphibians had only just started climbing out of the water at that time.

    • @leonardo-miranda Sweet!! Thank you for all of that info. This is how I’m able to retain it and learn, so I really appreciate it.

    • The general size and shape looks like an upper limb bone be it a femur or humerus. The shape is not that of a cow or horse. Maybe seal.
