    • I think this is an ammonite, not a Gastropod

    • 🦕 -Maclurites Gastropods 🐌

These specimens are from either the Devonian period or the Ordovician period. Approximately 387 million years ago (Devonian period) to roughly 460 million years ago. (Ordovician Period)

Gastropods weren’t the only creatures inhabiting the region, crinoids, trilobites, cephalopods and other marine invertebrates were abundant. 🌎

Some gastropods and cephalopods are super- ficially alike in external appearance. However, when one looks closely at specimens from each class, there are certain obvious differences. Gastropod shells are one continuous chamber, while cephalopods have several divided chambers in their shells to control buoyancy. (Gastropods are snails 🐌 – Cephalopods are squids. 🦑)

In the photos you will find a chart of the geological history of Lake Champlain dating back to 1.3 billion years. In addition you will find a chart of the Molluscs family tree. Both are valuable tools to understanding these fossils. 🧐
