FOSSIL UPLOAD
First, make sure you have a myFOSSIL account, this is required to upload your fossil information. If you are interested in seeing if your fossil can be used for research purposes, please follow through the following steps. They walk you through the information needed and why it is helpful for other scientists to use it for research questions. Even if the information you have on your fossil is not enough to be used for research purposes it will still benefit the community through educational means and help others identify their fossils. Specimens that have sufficient information will be uploaded to iDigBio and GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) for public accessibility.
If you have already gone through the stepwise process that explains each piece of data please click through to a summary tab where you can enter in your specimen data on a single page.

Hi, @erich-rose – I always like to see echinoderms entered into the database! The PBDB suggests Euechinoidea as the order (which is different from iDigBio). Is echinoid ordinal taxonomy undergoing (or requiring) some work?

I know @ryan-roney knows some about Cretaceous echinoids but he…[Read more]
Well now that is all confusing. I just revised it to match the Echinoid Directory (Smith & Kroh, 2011) which has always been my go to for fossil echinoids. And I should have checked that against what the “MyFossil auto-fill” inserted. I’m going to compare the three: iDigBio, PaleoBioDB and the Ech Directory…
I’ve struggled a lot with taxonomy recently (mostly of mollusks) and have been checking all the databases I can. I think the Echinoid Directory likely has the most updated classification as it was generated by the experts working on echinoid taxonomy & evolution.
Certainly for many of us trying to keep up with the most current taxonomy is a challenge. Even amongst the professionals they are only as good as their own specialty. What I try and tell other collectors is that they shouldn’t get too hung up on having every order, class or family figured out. In fact just getting a fossil identified to genus…[Read more]
Very good rules to live by! My specialty is in blastozoan echinoderms and I’ve been venturing into Cenozoic mollusk taxonomy and it gives me such a headache!
