FOSSIL UPLOAD
First, make sure you have a myFOSSIL account, this is required to upload your fossil information. If you are interested in seeing if your fossil can be used for research purposes, please follow through the following steps. They walk you through the information needed and why it is helpful for other scientists to use it for research questions. Even if the information you have on your fossil is not enough to be used for research purposes it will still benefit the community through educational means and help others identify their fossils. Specimens that have sufficient information will be uploaded to iDigBio and GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) for public accessibility.
If you have already gone through the stepwise process that explains each piece of data please click through to a summary tab where you can enter in your specimen data on a single page.

Hi there! The photo seems a little out of focus on my end. Could it be a strophominid brachiopod?
it could be a strophomenid, i never thought of that, i’ll look more into it. Thank you for the suggestion.
Hi, @joseph-scott – I’m tentatively agreeing with @mackenzie-smith – if you could upload a more in focus image we could probably narrow down the taxonomy a bit further! I’ll also tag in @nathan-newell who is a local expert and may have some insight on the local fauna that will help!!
I’d agree with @mackenzie-smith and @jbauer. I’ve found a few Leptaena brachiopods in West Virginia, so I’d bet that’s what this is.
#jbauer note the head at top and the plate on side and long bill with serrated edge to the left and down.
Hi, @heath-carroll – not sure what you are referring to? The shape of the rock? I think it’s just a chunk of limestone with a brachiopod in it.
That’s a rock with a shell in the middle
