FOSSIL UPLOAD
First, make sure you have a myFOSSIL account, this is required to upload your fossil information. If you are interested in seeing if your fossil can be used for research purposes, please follow through the following steps. They walk you through the information needed and why it is helpful for other scientists to use it for research questions. Even if the information you have on your fossil is not enough to be used for research purposes it will still benefit the community through educational means and help others identify their fossils. Specimens that have sufficient information will be uploaded to iDigBio and GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) for public accessibility.
If you have already gone through the stepwise process that explains each piece of data please click through to a summary tab where you can enter in your specimen data on a single page.

Hi, @dawn-vitale – really interesting specimen, how were you able to identify it as wood? There is certainly abundant wood in that area but I’ve never collected there and am interested in your process. @mackenzie-smith is our resident fossil plant expert.
@dawn-vitale @jbauer I can’t say if it’s wood or not. From the picture it looks like the texture could be caused by turbidity in the water at the time it was formed. Again, hard to say one way or another.
That was kind of my feelings on the specimen @mackenzie-smith. Let me also tag in someone who is a bit more local and may have seen something like this – @nathan-newell!
I collect a lot of petrified wood . I have a very nice piece that I posted earlier.
@jbauer Neat! I’ve seen rocks like this before, and I often can’t quite determine if they’re wood either.
@dawn-vitale Hi, Dawn! What do the edges look like? I wonder if there’s some indication of rings or a bark layer or something.
I’ll post a picture of the back and sides
