FOSSIL UPLOAD
First, make sure you have a myFOSSIL account, this is required to upload your fossil information. If you are interested in seeing if your fossil can be used for research purposes, please follow through the following steps. They walk you through the information needed and why it is helpful for other scientists to use it for research questions. Even if the information you have on your fossil is not enough to be used for research purposes it will still benefit the community through educational means and help others identify their fossils. Specimens that have sufficient information will be uploaded to iDigBio and GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) for public accessibility.
If you have already gone through the stepwise process that explains each piece of data please click through to a summary tab where you can enter in your specimen data on a single page.

Hi @Kyle-Eichhorn, perhaps Macrostrat: https://macrostrat.org/map/#/z=1.5/x=16/y=23/bedrock/lines/ can help you narrow down the age and geological formation this came from.
@samantha-ocon thank you 🙂
Awesome and well preserved specimen, @kyle-eichhorn! Are you using the app or the web browser? The web version has a taxon wizard that when you type in the species name it will autofill the higher taxonomy, saving you some trouble. Alpena is probably Middle Devonian.
@jbauer I have the app, but I will use the website now that you say that! thank you.
@jbauer also I wish I had a before picture. It was covered by it’s matrix and I could only see part of the corner. very happy with how it turned out.
Wow, @kyle-eichhorn – that’s even better! Are you local to Alpena?
@jbauer no I’m from the Clare area about a couple hours south. But I hike up in Atlanta and Vanderbilt every year so it’s slowly become on3 of my favorite places to go.
Thank you, @JBauer! @Kyle-Eichhorn, would you be willing to change the taxonomy to reflect your ID?
@kyle-eichhorn – I work at UM Museum of Paleontology! Maybe we will cross paths some day. We have a pretty active local club that collects all over this area. Hopefully things will eventually get better so we can get back out as a group.
@jbauer that would be great 🙂 how do I get involved with the club?
Hi, @kyle-eichhorn – the club usually meets the first Friday of every month… but currently no meetings for the foreseeable future. Here is their website with info on how to join – you can probably be added to the listserv now so you can get updates when things are back up and running! http://michiganbasinfossils.org/aboutus
Hi, @Kyle-Eichhorn, could you add more photos of this specimen from different angles and of the different sides?
