Lagerstätten: Exceptional preservation. Extraordinary fossils

March 23, 2019 - March 24, 2019

$30 – $110

Exceptional preservation. Extraordinary fossils. It’s the dream of every paleontologist to find such a spot. Sometimes that dream comes true when an explorer finds a Lagerstätte — a place where time and circumstance conspire to preserve ancient worlds in exquisite detail. Join the Western Interior Paleontological Society for its 11th Founders Symposium to learn about some of the world’s greatest such sites and hear their stories from experts who know them best.

The 2019 keynote speaker is Derek F. G. Briggs, co-author of The Fossils of the Burgess Shale (1994) and co-discoverer, with Simon Conway Morris and H.G. Whittington, of the true nature of many Burgess Shale fossils, including the Cambrian predator, Anomalocaris. Briggs is the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Professor of Geology and Geophysics; Curator in Charge of Invertebrate Paleontology, Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

• Two days of talks by paleontologists
• Educational exhibits
• Displays of fossils
• Paleo art show and sale with over a dozen artists

Registration is required for the talks. The exhibits, displays, and art show are free and open to the public.
