“Which Came First-the Flower or the Seed,” David Jarzen talk at Burroughs Nature Club Meeting (OH)
April 20, 2018 @ 7:30 pm
“Which Came First-the Flower or the Seed”
a talk by Dr. David Jarzen, paleobotanist, palynologist, and Cleveland Museum of Natural History Research Associate
at the Burroughs Nature Club meeting
“To ask this question is akin to asking “which came first the chicken or the egg?”
The answer is not easily found, but the journey to look into this age-old question has provided many researchers with surprises and exciting careers. In the April’s talk, Dr. Jarzen will take the Burroughs Nature Club on an illustrated tour of the world of flowers and seeds, and provide some clues to help answer the title question.
To get to the “root” of the question, the work of Dr. David Dilcher (Indiana University) will shed some light on what constitutes the “first flower.” Dilcher and his Chinese colleagues claim to have found the first flower, which thus may have preceded the first seeds….or did the seeds give rise to the first flower?”
