I’m looking to buy a 3D scanner, and am curious what others are using and how they feel they work for large objects.

It depends on the purpose of the scans. If you are looking for science quality scans, NextEngine is the best in the market:

That’s about $3000

Makerbot has also scanners, but these are not science quality. http://store.makerbot.com/digitizer

There is an open source app that comes from Microsoft Research and claims to produce science quality scans. This will be launched this month, so I have not tested yet.
