    @bmacfadden, @egardner, @rleder
    Hi! I received a fossil ID request from someone on the FOSSIL Facebook page. I’m wondering if we can help her identify it. She said it was found on the “Florida gulf coast beach. It is very large–more than 1 ft. wide.” and attached some pictures, which I have attached here.

    Any info we can give her would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Lisa

    Ok Lisa, @llundgren,

    it is the skull fragment of a whale or dolphin, better identification will take some more time but it is definitely a whale skull.

    all the best

    @rleder Follow up from the Facebook message, after I told her that it had been identified as a whale: “Wow! Very interesting! I read that a few years ago, some short-finned pilot whales stranded themselves on an island just south of Marco Island, where it was found. Maybe that is where it came from! Thank you so much for posting that and getting back to me! It’s been driving everyone crazy trying to figure it out”

    Nice @llundgren, actually I assumed a pilot whale … I am always happy to help.
