I had a great time this morning…. My Earth and Space Science Class hosted a class of 14 4th and 5th graders and assisted as the 4th and 5th graders sorted through some of the auroa matrix. They drew scientific drawings of their favorite find . I was so proud of my students. We completed the geologic time line activity and my students had worked on the matrix identification themselves last week was great. I had placed a tray for each student with dark construction paper on the bottom a laminated id sheet a magnifying glass and a black and white paper copy of id sheet to write on… a pencil and private eye magnifier and a small ruler to measure. was so much fun.

Hello!
I know several of you are regular Peace River visitors, and a few of you were offering to take people out. Well I am ready! I know the river is high right now, but as soon as it lowers enough, my son and I really want to go. We don’t scuba dive, so would like to be in an area shallow enough to dig and sift. I would like to go before it gets TOO cold.

Hi Ginny!
I’d love to take you and your son to the peace. This is the USGS website we use. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/fl/nwis/uv?site_no=02295637 (Zolfo Springs). How we gauge when we go in the river is when Zolfo Springs is at 5′ or less you can find a place to dig. However you also have to watch the discharge. It’s measured in cubic feet per second. I’ve found that below 100 is comfortable with children. Do you have a kayak or canoe?

I will keep an eye out! I have an inflatable kayak.

-
Let me know when you decide to go! I know a few of use would enjoy going out! The last time I went was in December and it was beautiful!
-
I will definitely let you know!

Hi Jen,
Will be attending GSA conference, since I live in Seattle, helping Bruce and Jeannette at MyFOSSIL booth. Would love to have a group meeting.
Good luck weathering Irma!

Who all is attending the annual GSA meeting this October in Seattle? Would anyone be interested in scheduling a meet up? I can organize something if there is enough interest!
Best,
Jen-
Hi Jen,
A few of us are attending including myself, @egardner, @bmacfadden, @vperez, @paul-kester, @john-westgaard and a few more. We should meet up!-
Great! I created a spreadsheet with everyone listed above’s talk times and put in a column for availability outside of the conference. You guys have an awesome looking citizen science session! I’m looking like the outsider! You can find and edit it here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KODV3CY8_OjqZla3gzXg1IccFsYDjsNoD3iRwO4mTYE/edit?usp=sharing

I took a picture of George @george-powell pointing to one of the shark jaws at the museum. I don’t remember the connection between George and that particular shark. Does anyone remember the significance?
-
Hi David I hope you are doing well, could you e-mail me the photo so I can see the shark you are talking about & I will let you know what it is. Take Care George at [email protected]

@jeanette-pirlo – I’ve been asked to give a presentation on this workshop at the next meeting of my fossil club. Are the pictures taken by the photographer posted anywhere? I’d like to look through them and possibly use them.
-
I don’t think they have been posted on the Facebook page yet. I’ve put a lot on my Facebook page, here is a link to the album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10209902784143213.1073741846.1142160438&type=1&l=35755f083b It should be public but if you have issues let me know, feel free to use any of them you want!
-
Hi @david-lindberg I am posting them on Facebook today. Click on the link to access the photos: https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheFossilProject/photos/?tab=album&album_id=682267865309292

My finds from Rattlesnake Creek!
-
Very nice finds, @pam-plummer! Thank you for sharing! Have you taken individual photos and posted these finds in the Fossil Gallery? Oh, and a quick tip: including something for scale, like a pen or a quarter, would make your image even better 🙂
-
I have better fossils I can post as soon as they’re prepped!
-
Awesome! Thanks, @pam-plummer! Looking forward to seeing your prep work!
