The first item is a piece of chert which appears to have been worked (so an artifact), the second is a hash plate of mostly Pseudogygites latimarginatus from the ordovician of canada, very nice!
-
the first one is concrete not chert, ocean city sea shell party. the second one is from Flint ridge Ohio it is a piece of flint hence the name thank you.

1 year, 3 months ago1 year, 3 months agoCould someone explain to me what this would be, don’t know much about rocks #fossil
-
Not a fossil, but a nice piece with quartz or calcite crystals. To tell which it is you can find an inconspicuous place to scratch or drop an acid (vinegar is ok, I find lemon juice sometimes works better). Calcite will scratch or fizz, quartz will not. Sometimes it’s easier to hear it fizzing than see it.
-
if you don’t have any of that available, you could scratch with a steel pin/nail, if It scratches then it is calcite, if it doesn’t scratch then quartz as that has a moh hardness scale of 7

Ok thanks Corinne and Ben

I think it’s a kind of coral
-
ok…i feel kinda silly not knowing these things but im sure ill get the hang of it
-
No problem, that’s what this app is for
-
@raquel-larke don’t feel silly, these guys have been extinct since before the time of dinosaurs! Not something one sees everyday. This is called a rugose coral, or horn coral, an extinct type of solitary coral. Do you have an approximate location (nearest town) for the find? I might be able to narrow down the age a bit.
-
seaforth ontario
-
Nice piece.

thank u 😊

Is there any sedation on the tooth or rock?
-
Not sedation but serration
-
u can see a few little dips in it but the kinda big
-
Where was this found? Also could you post photos of it from different angles? Thanks!
-
in Montana I think I gave a few rocks to co worker and one day he brang this to me and gave to me
-
and I’ve been polishing it
-
If it is from Montana, that’s a good sign because it’s is a very important state for fossil finds, there’s lots of dinosaur beds there. This actually has potential to be something really cool, could you post a picture of the bottom end of it?

Rugose corals?
-
i have no clue…lol
-
i have only been on this group for a little now but love leaning about my finds
-
@raquel-larke it looks like on this slab you have brachiopods (lampshells), Fenestellid bryozoan (a colonial organism), and Rugose corals (AKA horn corals, extinct type of solitary coral). They appear to be dolomotized. If you have an approximate location (nearest town perhaps), I could hunt down an age for you. It is likely from sometime in the…[Read more]
