4 years, 11 months ago4 years, 11 months agoStill working on cleaning up this very poorly preserved Gomphothere tusk. You can see bits of aluminum foil glued to it. We did this to protect the extremely chalky enamel when working to remove it from the rest of the skull. Now I’m working to get the foil off as well as remove all of the remaining sand. Going on 6 months on this specimen. #…[Read more]

We usually have to hand carry all jackets, regardless of size and weight, out to the van. Today, we were lucky to have someone near by who could help! #method -

Between today and tomorrow, we will remove as much matrix as possible, at least until we reach the skull bones and tusks, in efforts to lighten the jacket, making it easier to carry out. Mike, could you give a bit of detail on what we are looking at in this photo? How is a paleomag sample collected and prepared? Just the very basics would be great. Thanks.
-
Of course! Montbrook paleomagnetism sediment samples were collected throughout the section to compare results from the top and bottom. All sample orientations were recorded in the field as well as on the sample themselves (that’s the black arrow you see on the pictured sediment). Since we all know how crumbly the sand-dominated Montbrook…[Read more]
