thanks

There are two important items to identifying a shark tooth. The first is location where found as that establishes the age. The second is a more or less complete root as similar looking species can have different roots. Thus said I can only identify these generally. All but the far left tooth and the portion of ray tooth, the rest are sand…[Read more]

Greetings @delwin-glasner ! I have experimented with a friend’s digital microscope with impressive results. We put a trilobite that was just a few millimeters long and the microscope brought into full relief with impressive detail.
-
can you share the make and model of the digital microscope

@delwin-glasner Here is the make and model as you requested: LCD Digital microscope ONETEKS 4.3 inch. It runs for about $60 on Amazon.

Thanks, I’ll take a look

Hi, @corinne-daycross – Really nice Elrathia specimen. Would you want to update the classification online? Using the Taxon Wizard on the Classification tab you should be able to search Elrathia and it will populate the higher order classification for you!
We can also update the geochronology to at least be Cambrian since this critter is pretty…[Read more]

Hi, @corinne-daycross – I don’t know how specific we can get with the identification but we can minimally put in Kingdom Animalia > Phylum Brachiopoda
Here is a link to a geologic map of the area – you could try to narrow down the locality to get a better idea of the geologic…[Read more]

Is the formation the Madison Limestone? If so, I’ve collected in it before! Also here is a link with the distribution: https://macrostrat.org/sift/#/strat_name/3694

4 years, 8 months ago4 years, 8 months agoSo here’s my current fossil photo setup. The stuff I incorporated from the workshop include: 1)Velvet back drop: I got a necklace hanger because that’s the only flat velvet thing that Michael’s had, but it works pretty well. It shows all kinds of dust, though; I need to figure out how to clean it. 2) Secondary light source: In this case, I’m…[Read more]
-
I agree with the velvet showing every speck of dust. The way we use it in our photo lab is just to have a good solid flat background with no reflection so that in the processing of the image, we have an easier time removing the background and placing it on a digital, black background. Perhaps a lint roller? Or a quick pass through the dryer?
-
@jeanette-pirlo I tried a lint roller and it works for picking up the little bits of stuff, but it can’t pick up the dust for some reason. The dryer might work, but this is a necklace stand so I can’t throw it in. It might be easier to just remove any smudges digitally, like you all do.
-
-
@jess-cost A lint roller hasn’t worked all that well for me, but I wonder if the smudges are really oil or something from my hands instead of dust particles.

Capsular fruit of some sort! It looks like it lacks sepals so we can rule out Ericaceae, Malvaceae and Theaceae. Could be something in Lythraceae, Rosaceae or Betulaceae. It could also be a flower. Not entirely sure if the structure in the middle is part of another valve, a columella or floral and the other valves may be sepals or petals.
-
So, minimally @corinne-daycross can add in Kingdom Plantae, any further than that – @mackenzie-smith?
I searched the area on Macrostrat: https://macrostrat.org/map/#/z=9.4/x=-118.6018/y=48.5591/bedrock/lines/ looks pretty complicated, any guess in age?
Eon Phanerozoic > ? if you pin point further on the map, Corinne, you could maybe tell but it…[Read more]
-
@jbauer @corinne-daycross Minimum would be angiosperm since it is a fruit. It is Eocene for sure since it is from the Stonerose site (I forget where in the Eocene though but it is Eocene).
-
@mackenzie-smith – does angiosperm fit nicely into the Linnaean system or not so much?
-
@jbauer Depends on who you talk to. Some people will put it as a phylum (or division since many botanists use that term to seperate themselves from zoologists). You may also see the word Magnoliophyta which is the exact same thing as angiosperms. Magnoliophyta technically follows nomenclature rules but angiosperm is a historic term that everyone…[Read more]
