B Grimstad posted an image in the group Mollusc Mania from the myFOSSIL app 3 years, 5 months ago
3 years, 5 months ago3 years, 5 months agoIs this an Ammonoid? Also how clean it and keep it from crumbling?
-
certainly not an ammonite. @chloe-geddes will identify this mineral for you.
-
Hi @b-grimstad this is just a fun looking rock, as @leonardo-miranda said above!
-
that isn’t a ammonite but maybe milky-quartzite
-
It looks alot like chert or other cryptocrystalline rock.
-
Appreciate your input

@neven-popov-2 do you think cobicula could be the shell
-
I think this shell is a bit too triangular. If you look at the original shell, it’s more elongated like an oval- but I’m not sure hmmm…
-
you could be right @daniel-park but the reason I put it here is that there is no other shell that comes as close as this one does to @neven-popov-2 shell’.

Hi there @jeff-alliaume you’ve uploaded some super cool ammonite fossils! Do you have specifics about the site in Luxemburg they were found at? This can help narrow the geochron for ID!
-
@mackenzie-ross-2 Hi Thanks. I found them in Ellange (South East of Luxemburg)
-
@i-edwards Hi thank you very much for the info!

Ammonite

I agree

Thank you!

One thing about posting fossils is it is very helpful to have a scale and the geological age, formation or area it came from to be able to obtain an ID. I can’t tell if this is 1 cm or 30 cm. This is a cephalopod, but I cannot tell if it is an ammonite or not. There were spiral cephalopods prior to the Cretaceous period that are not a…[Read more]

I’d say it’s about 2 inches wide and Kansas City MO area

Hi there, @derek-greenwald, cool find! If you could upload pictures of this specimen with a scale and from different angles, that would help narrow down the identification!

Genus Turritella. If I had to guess, that looks like Turritella andersoni lawsoni Dickerson, 1916, which is very common in the Llajas Formation.
-
I’m sorry but what is the Llajas formation?
-
A geologic formation is a basic unit of rock that can be correlated with a specific time period and environment. The age of the Llajas Formation is approximately 47-50 million years old, from the Eocene Epoch.
-
Woah that’s nuts! Do u think I’d be able to find more where I found this one?
-
Sure. However, there are other formations in that general area, which makes it very important to collect good location data, especially GPS coordinates. MyFossil has a series of short videos on YouTube, I recommend you start with the one on lithostratigraphy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEDT5xrSifI

Ok thank u!

3 years, 11 months ago3 years, 11 months agoI bought this shell at a hobby store a while ago, but I’m unable to tell which specific type this is. It resembles something from the conus species of sea snails, but I’m not sure.
-
@noah-nowicki I’m pretty sure this is a shell from the Conus genus as well, but I’m not sure about the exact species.
-
Cool, a venomous snail’s shell!
-
That is not a fossil!! 😡
-
Clearly, but many people post items that are non fossil in nature. So, I’ll keep doing exactly what I was doing thank you very much.

Hi @Noah-Nowicki! I’m not super well acquainted with rudists, so I’m going to tag in @JBauer, who is the Invert Paleo Curator at the University of Michigan.
-
Hi @noah-nowicki you found this in Michigan? It may be a rugose coral rather than a rudist bivalve.
-
Interesting, I just looked at some pictures of this type of coral and it seems to match. The rocks from the landscaping rock bed may have come from another place, but I’m not completely sure on where the rocks this was in cane from.
