4 years, 6 months ago4 years, 6 months agoNot a fossil, thought it was a concretion. I cracked in half and found this odd rounded Crystal inside, looks like a bean, assuming quartz. Came from what appeared to be mudstone. Any thoughts on the process that formed this #fossil

This part of the formation is a conglomerate. It takes a lot of energy to move large rocks so we know that it took a lot of depositional energy to form this unit.
-
Generally speaking we rarely find fossils in the conglomerate layers because they get crushed by wave action/transportation.
-
cool…I was amazed at the density… insanely hard. was energy due to volcanism or glacial?
-
@adam-frey I don’t know about this formation in particular but it can be from heavy wave action (think certain rocky beaches) or from elevation (large rocks falling down a mountain after a desert flash flood or bottom of a marine canyon).

nice conglomerate.

4 years, 6 months ago4 years, 6 months agoCollection site Renton WA Cedar River. I have heard this area is from Eocine era. Is this mudstone? Soft in most areas. Has veins of fine orange and brown gravelly material…found one small white bone and two small mollusks fossils. Breaks on in cubes or small plates. What’s is the black color and is this typical of this era and a good place…[Read more]

@mackenzie-Smith is pretty familiar with the Pacific Northwest- any ideas of what’s going on here geologically?
-
Hi @adam-frey. I believe that is the Renton Formation. This part is shale. You may want to check with Washington’s Department of Natural Resources before collecting. WA changed their collecting laws about 5 years ago. The Northwest Paleontological Association would be the people to talk to. They are a group of avocational paleontologists who meet…[Read more]
