I’m new at ID, and am just going off the internet. Also if anyone on here is from Virginia I’d love to know!
@nathan-newell is from VA and @vperez is a shark expert!
Hi @alley-b, it looks like you’ve got a Carcharhinus shark tooth. Carcharhinus is a common genus of sharks, with over 30 different species alive today, including some iconic species like the Bull Shark.
Thank you @vperez ! Any idea on how to age this thing?
@jbauer thank you so much!
Where in Virginia did you find it?
In Yorktown, VA along the mouth to one of the creeks.
It is either Miocene or Pliocene. There is actually a geologic unit called the Yorktown Formation that I’m guessing your tooth came from, which would be somewhere between 10 and 3 million years old.
That makes me really excited! I need to research that more.
Yup, I’m from Virginia! Welcome to myFOSSIL @alley-b ! Check out my fossil list if you’re curious about the types of fossils and locations I’ve found in the Virginia area. 👍
Awesome! Thank you!
